Is Musical Theater Summer Camp Worth It?

by Guy Jacobs

As a parent of school-age kids, you may be looking to keep them actively engaged in something throughout the summer. If your kids are in junior high or high school, you are might be looking for something to help them build their confidence. One of the best ways to help your kids learn confidence while having fun is to enroll them in a musical theater summer camp. While attending, they will be surrounded by their peers who are also trying to figure out who they are, all while learning acting and singing skills.

There are many different types of musical theater camps to consider before applying to a specific organization. For example, you do not want to enroll your child in a camp that focuses a lot on tapdancing if that is not something that you feel your child will be using much of in the future.

Here are a few more things to consider when choosing a musical theater camp.

Summer Goals

Musical camps can help your child to build towards their summer goals. It is a good idea to set these goals as soon as school gets out, and work towards them as the summer goes on. For example, if your child wants to improve their singing voice or skills, they should work towards that throughout the summer.

Auditions

Some summer camps require that kids audition in order to be a part of their organization. Make sure that your child prepares for that audition. All applications should be age-appropriate and demonstrate your child's strong suit. Depending on their age, they may not have to apply. Asking questions to the staff upon finding a camp is the best way to know what they require.

Preparing for College

While summer camp is a great way to pass the time before classes start, many kids learn skills that they carry into their college years. Being proficient in singing, acting, and other musical theater disciplines can strengthen any college application. In this way theater, camp can actually prepare your child for college.

In conclusion, a musical theater summer camp is much more than just a fun way to pass time. The skills your kids learn there could help them not only throughout their high school career but could actually help them get into the college of their choosing. Research camps in your area, and make sure to apply early, since they usually fill up quickly. Good luck!
